Wilderness Farmhouse
Headcorn history

Headcorn is a village in Kent, located on the floodplain of the River Beult 8 miles south east of Maidstone, on the A274 road to Tenterden.

History

A Neolithic polished flint axe was found in the stream near the present school in Headcorn, and a bronze palstave axehead dating from the Bronze Age reveal the presence of people in the area from early times.

The earliest written records, are references in charters of King Wihtred and King Offa to Wick Farm, 724 AD and Little Southernden, 785 AD. Headcorn must have started in the days of the Kingdom of Kent, as a den or clearing, to which pigs were driven to feed on acorns in the Wealden Forest.

In 1940, following the evacuation from Dunkirk, many thousands of British and allied troops received their first meal in England at Headcorn Station. Local volunteers assisted the Royal Army Service Corps in providing refreshments. 100 trains per day were halted, allowing only eight minutes for each.

The 1986 list of buildings of architectural or historic interest has 88 entries for Headcorn, including the parish church (Grade I), the former old vicarage (II*) renamed Headcorn Manor about 1960, the Cloth Hall (II*) and Shakespeare House (II).

  • Wilderness says it all. A lovely little bright minihome in a rural setting. Quiet at night and birdsounds to wake you up.  Would have stayed longer if possible in our (her) schedule. Would definitely recommend.

  • We really enjoyed our stay at Wilderness B&B where we were able to completely detox from the city environment.

  • The shepherds hut is perfect for a romantic getaway. Big enough for comfort, small enough for coziness. Delightful on a warm evening, but beautifully snug in a massive thunderstorm. Idyllic.

  • Have visited Wilderness twice before and will certainly visit again. Numerous National Trust sites in the area.

    Mr & Mrs S, UK, July 2019

Delicious breakfast in a totally idyllic setting.
    This is the perfect getaway.

    Mr & Mrs P, UK, Nov 2019

  • Beautiful place to stay. Perfect for relaxing and close to so many places to visit. We stayed when going to the Wealden festival which took up all our time.

    Mr & Mrs T, UK, June 2019

  • The Wilderness is one of the most beautiful B&B’s we’ve stayed in. The location is really fantastic with a wonderful spacious garden, especially during Spring season. Victoria is a great host, very kind and helpful.  My rating in just one word? Excellent.
