Wilderness

Wilderness Farmhouse
Headcorn history

Headcorn is a village in Kent, located on the floodplain of the River Beult 8 miles south east of Maidstone, on the A274 road to Tenterden.

History

A Neolithic polished flint axe was found in the stream near the present school in Headcorn, and a bronze palstave axehead dating from the Bronze Age reveal the presence of people in the area from early times.

The earliest written records, are references in charters of King Wihtred and King Offa to Wick Farm, 724 AD and Little Southernden, 785 AD. Headcorn must have started in the days of the Kingdom of Kent, as a den or clearing, to which pigs were driven to feed on acorns in the Wealden Forest.

In 1940, following the evacuation from Dunkirk, many thousands of British and allied troops received their first meal in England at Headcorn Station. Local volunteers assisted the Royal Army Service Corps in providing refreshments. 100 trains per day were halted, allowing only eight minutes for each.

The 1986 list of buildings of architectural or historic interest has 88 entries for Headcorn, including the parish church (Grade I), the former old vicarage (II*) renamed Headcorn Manor about 1960, the Cloth Hall (II*) and Shakespeare House (II).

  • Delightful friendly people who were not intrusive but there if we needed anything. Everything was relaxed and well organised.
A tranquil place to stay in ‘The Shepherds Hut’
Hope to return to stay again.

    Mr & Mrs C, UK, July 2019

  • We had a wonderful 2 night stay in the shepherds hut (Bramley). Very comfortable bed, wood burning stove which we did not need to light as there was a heater which worked very well for the short episodes of time we were in the hut, fresh milk in the fridge, torch for getting home in the dark.  It felt like a very personal holiday to us, made all the more better by the little touches from Victoria. We are already telling friends about it and hope to go there again later in the year.

    Tips for other travellers
For anybody going to The Big Cat Sanctuary or Leeds Castle it’s a good location.

    Mr & Mrs C, UK, March 2019

  • Fabulous welcome to a beautiful stay in the country.
Delicious breakfast in a totally idyllic setting.
    This is the perfect getaway.

    Mr & Mrs P, UK, Nov 2019

  • Deliciously comfortable bed and a relaxed, welcoming and gracious atmosphere. We recommend it highly!

    Mr & Mrs A, USA, Oct 2019

  • The Wilderness is one of the most beautiful B&B’s we’ve stayed in. The location is really fantastic with a wonderful spacious garden, especially during Spring season. Victoria is a great host, very kind and helpful.  My rating in just one word? Excellent.

    Mr & Mrs O, Germany, April 2019

  • We were made to feel extremely welcome from the moment we arrived. Facilities were excellent, bed very comfy and whole experience lovely. Breakfast was delicious. We will definitely be back and have already passed on details to several friends. Xx

    Mr & Mrs W, UK, Feb 2019

  • Wilderness says it all. A lovely little bright minihome in a rural setting. Quiet at night and birdsounds to wake you up.  Would have stayed longer if possible in our (her) schedule. Would definitely recommend.

    Mr & Mrs H, NL, Oct 2019

  • We wish to say thank you to Victoria for being a super host. This is the third time we have stayed at the Wilderness B&B. We usually stay for a week and love the relaxed and peaceful ambience. It’s a treat to be so close to nature.
All the rooms are very comfortable and very clean.
Thank you so much again. We look forward to our next stay.

    Tips for other travellers
The location is perfect for enjoying the Kent countryside or visiting local attractions. We love steam trains and Victoria recommended we take a ride on the Kent and East Sussex Railway in Tenterden (a short drive from the B&B). The train journey was magical and we enjoyed a delicious lunch at Bodiam Castle.

The Wilderness is situated in an idyllic location, it’s wonderful to just sit in the orchard and read if you want to enjoy some ‘me time’!

    Mr & Mrs C, HK, August 2019

  • Have visited Wilderness twice before and will certainly visit again. Numerous National Trust sites in the area.

    Mr & Mrs S, UK, July 2019

  • We appreciated Victoria’s warm hospitality and excellent recommendations. The room was very private and quiet and comfortable. We will return when we are next in Kent.

Reasonably short drive to many National Trust properties in the area (Sissinghurst Castle Gardens, Bodiam Castle, Scotney Castle, Bateman’s) and the gardens of Great Dixter.  The location allows for further exploration of Kent and East Sussex.
